EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching depicts Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), who reigned as King of Spain from 1556 to 1598 and as King of Portugal from 1580 to 1598. The portrait is taken from the book "Elogios dos Reis de Portugal com os mais verdaderos retratos" (Elogies of the Kings of Portugal with the most true portraits) by Bernardo Brito, published in Lisbon in 1603. Philip II was born in Vienna, Austria, but succeeded his father, Charles V, as king of the Spanish Empire, which included territories in Europe, the Americas, and the Philippines. His reign was marked by political instability, economic difficulties, and military conflicts, including the Italian Wars and the Eighty Years' War against the Dutch. Despite these challenges, Philip II is remembered for his efforts to centralize the Spanish monarchy and strengthen its institutions. He established the Council of State and the Spanish Inquisition, and implemented a series of reforms aimed at improving the administration of justice, finance, and education. The image of Philip II in this etching shows him in formal attire, wearing a ruff collar and a crown adorned with pearls. The king is depicted in a serious and contemplative pose, with a thoughtful expression on his face. The background is simple, with a plain white background and no other distinguishing features. The book from which this portrait is taken, "Elogios dos Reis de Portugal," was a collection of biographies and portraits of Portuguese monarchs. Bernardo Brito, the author, was a Portuguese historian and writer, who dedicated the work to King Philip III of Spain. The etching is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies during the late 16th century.
