EDITORS COMMENTS
This relief depicts Pharaoh Akhenaten, a revolutionary monarch of Egypt's 18th Dynasty, during the Amarna Period, around 1360 BC. The quartzite carving is an intricate part of an offering scene, discovered at El-Amarna in Egypt. Akhenaten, also known as Aten-iven, or Aten is the king, is shown with a distinctive representation of his face, characterized by a long, slender form and a large, Aten disk above his head. This artistic departure from traditional Egyptian portraits reflects Akhenaten's religious beliefs, which centered around the worship of the sun disc, Aten. Akhenaten's reign marked a significant shift in Egyptian culture, with a focus on monotheistic beliefs and a new capital city, Akhetaten, built at Amarna. His rule was preceded by Amenhotep IV and succeeded by Tutankhamun. This relief, now housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, offers a rare glimpse into the artistic and religious innovations of the Amarna Period. The intricate detail of the relief, with its broken edges, reveals the skill and craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptian artisans. The offering scene, with the pharaoh as the offerer, underscores the importance of religious rituals and offerings in ancient Egyptian society.
