Petticoat Lane, London - View down the market

Petticoat Lane, London - a long shot. A street clothes market on Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street. Secondhand clothes and bric-a-brac had been sold in an area known as Peticote Lane since the early 17th century. An influx of immigrant Huguenots and later immigrants Jews developed the manufacturing in the area and maintained the traditions of trade. Despite a severe decline following WWII, a further influx of Asian immigrants in the 1970s once again restored the areas vitality. Date: circa 1930s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Petticoat Lane, London: A Vibrant Hub of Fashion and Commerce since the 17th Century This photograph transports us back in time to the bustling streets of Petticoat Lane in London's East End during the 1930s. The scene unfolds on Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street, where the tradition of secondhand clothes and bric-a-brac trading has been a cherished part of the area's history since the early 17th century. The influx of immigrant communities, particularly Huguenots and later Jews, played a significant role in developing the manufacturing industry and maintaining the market's unique character. The area's rich heritage is evident in the diverse array of textiles, hats, and accessories on display, as well as the crowded stalls and shoppers pressing forward in search of the perfect find. Despite a severe decline following World War II, the area was once again revitalized in the 1970s with the arrival of Asian immigrants. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the vitality and energy that has made Petticoat Lane a beloved destination for fashion enthusiasts and collectors for centuries. The market's enduring allure lies in its ability to bring people together, transcending cultural boundaries and offering a unique shopping experience unlike any other. This photograph is a testament to the power of tradition, community, and the enduring appeal of a good bargain.
