EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Westland S.55 series 1 helicopter, G-AOHE (msn WA.126), gracefully resting on floats. First registered in 1956, this historic helicopter was initially operated by the South Georgia Co. Ltd. for shipboard whale-spotting operations in the icy waters. Christian Salvesen, a renowned shipping company, oversaw the operations. The helicopter's distinctive silhouette, with its distinctive Westland rotor blades, exudes a sense of elegance and power. In 1961, the helicopter was acquired by Bristow Helicopters and later converted to Series 3, featuring a more powerful Bristol Siddeley Gnome H1000 Mk.501 turbo-shaft engine. Despite its impressive capabilities, the helicopter's tenure with Bristow Helicopters was short-lived. On June 18, 1969, the aircraft met an unfortunate end. This photograph, taken circa 1962, captures a moment in time when this Westland S.55 series 1 helicopter, G-AOHE, was at the forefront of maritime aviation, contributing to the exploration and discovery of the vast, uncharted waters. This image is a testament to the rich history of aviation and its role in shaping the world's transportation landscape. The Westland S.55 series 1 helicopter, G-AOHE, remains an iconic symbol of the early days of helicopter technology and its application in various industries, including marine exploration and transportation.
