This vintage photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of an Illinois Air National Guard Republic F-84F Thunderstreak jet fighter, specifically 52-6520 of the 169th Fighter Squadron. The image was taken during the 1960s, with various military units having taken ownership of the aircraft throughout its career. In 1956, it was assigned to the USAF 3600th Combat Crew Training Wing. Two years later, it was transferred to the Indiana Air National Guard's 113th Fighter Squadron. By 1962, the plane was part of the USAF 366th Fighter Bomber Wing. The Illinois Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Squadron claimed the Thunderstreak once again in the late 1950s, and it was later joined by the Texas Air National Guard's 182nd Fighter Squadron. However, the F-84F's military tenure came to an end in February 1971 when it was put into storage at the AMARC (Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center) bone yard. This iconic aircraft, with its distinctive Thunderstreak designation, represents a significant period in aviation history and the dedication of the various National Guard units that maintained and operated it.
