EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Curtiss C-46F-1-CU Commando N4877V, once owned by Capitol Airways. With its sleek design and powerful engines, this aircraft exudes a sense of strength and adventure. Originally built in 1944 as 44-78619, it was later sold to the Foreign Liquidation Commission in August 1947. In 1948, aviation legends Claire L. Chennault and Whiting Willauer acquired the aircraft under registration N8309C. It then went through several ownership changes before being purchased by Flying Tiger Line in January 1953 as N4877V. Intercontinental Airways took over in June of that year, followed by Interair Parts Corporation and F. A. Miller & D. Rich. Eventually transferred to Airplane Enterprises in December 1953, this remarkable plane found itself leased to Capitol Airways in April 1954 under its original registration number N4877V. The photo captures the aircraft during this period around circa 1957. However, its journey came to a tragic end on August 31st, 1962 when it crashed at Phou Fa (LS16), Laos. Despite this unfortunate event, the image immortalizes the beauty and historical significance of this iconic aircraft. Displayed proudly by Mary Evans Picture Library's Prints Online collection, this photograph serves as a reminder of aviation history's triumphs and tragedies alike.
