EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Convair 440 Metropolitan N29DR, serial number 146, as it gracefully takes to the skies. Built in 1955 as a Convair 340-51 (XA-KIM), this historic aircraft was delivered to Aeronaves de Mexico (SE-CRM) in January 1960, where it underwent conversion to a 440 model for Linjeflyg in Sweden. The Pratt and Whitney R-2800-CB16 and CB17 Double Wasp engines power the Metropolitan, which were a common choice for this aircraft model. Over the years, N29DR passed through various ownerships, including Nyx Aviation, Combs Airways, and Brennan and Hargreaves. In 1983, the plane was leased by the latter two companies, and in 1985, Combs Airways repossessed it. Basler Flight Services acquired the Convair 440 in December 1986, and it was later registered as N114BF. The aircraft underwent further upgrades with Basler Turbo Conversions in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in March 1994. The Convair 440 Metropolitan N29DR continued to serve in various capacities until it was acquired by the Weeks Air Museum in Polk City, Florida, in October 2008. This photograph, taken circa 1990, captures the essence of this iconic aeronautical model as it soars through the sky, leaving a trail of history in its wake.
