EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1970 SBAC Farnborough Air Show, the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) One-Eleven 475 prototype, registration G-ASYD (msn 053), takes center stage. The One-Eleven, a short- to medium-range jet airliner, was developed by the British Aircraft Corporation in the late 1960s as a response to the growing demand for more efficient and economical aircraft. The prototype, which first flew on March 27, 1968, was an important milestone in the One-Eleven's development. It was outfitted with Rolls-Royce Spey 511-8 engines, which provided the aircraft with a maximum speed of over 500 miles per hour and a range of around 1,500 miles. The One-Eleven was also notable for its advanced design features, including a T-tail and a high-mounted wing. At the 1970 SBAC Farnborough Air Show, the One-Eleven 475 prototype attracted a great deal of attention from aviation enthusiasts and industry professionals alike. The aircraft was displayed in its striking livery, with the British Aircraft Corporation logo proudly emblazoned on the fuselage. The image captures the moment as the One-Eleven taxis along the runway, ready for its next demonstration flight. The One-Eleven went on to have a successful career with various airlines around the world, including British Caledonian, Air Canada, and Lufthansa. It was eventually retired from commercial service in the late 1990s, but remains an important chapter in the history of British aviation. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the development and evolution of aircraft technology.
