EDITORS COMMENTS
Avro York C Mk. I LV626: The First Prototype, August 1942 This historic photograph captures the Avro York C Mk. I LV626, the very first prototype of this versatile British transport aircraft, on 28th August 1942. The image reveals the original twin fin tail design, a feature exclusive to the first and second prototypes. The Avro York, a development of the successful Avro Anson, was designed to meet the Royal Air Force's (RAF) requirement for a large transport aircraft capable of carrying troops, cargo, and passengers. Powered by four Bristol Hercules radial engines, the York proved to be an impressive and reliable aircraft that would serve the RAF and other military forces around the world for decades. However, as seen in this photograph, the initial design of the York featured an unusual twin fin tail configuration. This design was only used on the first and second prototypes, as LV626 was later retrofitted with a central fin during its conversion to the sole York C Mk.II. The central fin proved to be more effective and was adopted for all subsequent production models. The Avro York C Mk. I LV626's pioneering role in the development of this versatile transport aircraft is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of Avro's design team during World War II.
