EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored lithograph showcases three beautiful varieties of Persian ranunculus: Columbus, Argo, and Hilda. The intricately detailed botanical illustration was drawn and lithographed by the talented Worthington G. Smith, an architect, engraver, and mycologist, for the Floral Magazine in 1872. Smith's expertise in botanical illustration is evident in the precise depiction of each ranunculus flower's unique features. The Persian ranunculus, also known as Ranunculus asiaticus, is a popular ornamental flower that hails from Central Asia. These flowers are characterized by their large, flat, and often frilly petals, which come in a range of vibrant colors. In this illustration, we see the Columbus variety with its rich red petals, the Argo variety with its bright yellow hue, and the Hilda variety with its delicate pink blooms. The Floral Magazine was edited by Henry Honywood Dombrain, a clergyman gardener, from 1862 to 1873. Dombrain was a respected figure in the horticultural world and played a significant role in promoting the study and cultivation of exotic plants in Victorian England. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the Persian ranunculus, and a reminder of the important role that botanical illustrations played in documenting and preserving plant species during this period in history.
