Peg-leg peddlar with his tray of items for sale
" Any article on the board a penny" A man wounded in the Boer War, his leg lost resort to life as an itinerant tinker or peddlar, peddling his wares on the street. A Tinker was originally an itinerant tinsmith, who mended household utensils. The term became used in British society to refer to marginalized persons, of which this gentleman is a very fine example. This picture shows how easy it is to be wiped out from ones regular life in an instant. Date: 1907

Boer Bowler Boxes Disabled Duster Goods House Hold Injured Injury Itinerant Legged Lost Matches Peddling Penny Seller Selling Sells Tray Veteran
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the resilience and determination of a man named only as a 'Peg-leg Peddler,' who, after losing his leg in the Boer War, resorted to a life on the streets as an itinerant seller. Dressed in a bowler hat and a heavy duster coat, he balances precariously on a wooden leg, his tray of goods displayed proudly before him. The sign on his board reads, "Any article on the board a penny," a testament to his affordability and the meager means of his customers. The man's injury, a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war, forced him to abandon his previous life and take up the mantle of a tinker or peddler. Originally an itinerant tradesman who mended household utensils, the term 'tinker' came to be used pejoratively in British society to refer to marginalized individuals. This gentleman is a fine example of this unfortunate label. The photograph, taken in 1907, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the simple yet essential items for sale - matches, keys, and various household goods. Despite his injury and the challenges that came with it, the Peg-leg Peddler continues to sell his wares, demonstrating the human spirit's ability to adapt and endure even in the most difficult circumstances.
