Peace of Augsburg (September 25, 1555): A Milestone in Religious Tolerance and Political Stability in the Holy Roman Empire This historic print depicts the Peace of Augsburg, signed on September 25, 1555, during the Diet of Augsburg. The treaty, signed by Emperor Charles V and the forces of the Schmalkaldic League, marked the end of the Schmalkaldic War and brought religious peace to the Holy Roman Empire. The Peace of Augsburg, also known as the "Cuius Regio, Eius Religio" settlement, established the principle of "defensive" or "protective" territorial sovereignty, which allowed each prince to determine the religious affiliation of his domain. This principle, which translates to "whose realm, his religion," was a significant step towards religious tolerance in the Empire. The image on the print shows Emperor Charles V, represented by the imperial crown, and the leaders of the Schmalkaldic League, symbolized by various animals, seated at a table in a grand hall. The German Bible, open on the table, serves as a reminder of the importance of the written word in the religious and political discourse of the time. The Peace of Augsburg brought a degree of stability to the Holy Roman Empire, which had been plagued by religious conflicts and wars for decades. The treaty paved the way for the emergence of Protestantism as a legitimate alternative to Catholicism within the Empire and set the stage for the Thirty Years' War, which would ultimately lead to the end of the Holy Roman Empire. This 17th-century print is a testament to the historical significance of the Peace of Augsburg and the role it played in shaping the religious and political landscape of Europe.
