EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts the Parapercis colias, commonly known as the Blue Cod, a fish species native to the Southern Ocean. The illustration was created during Captain James Cook's second voyage of exploration to discover the southern continent, between the years 1772 and 1775. The painting is the work of George Forster, a naturalist and scientist on board the HMS Resolution, under the command of Captain James Cook. Forster's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the Blue Cod's scales, as well as the realistic representation of its distinctive blue-gray body and white spots. The painting also showcases the fish's single dorsal fin and anal fin, which are characteristic of the Gadiform order, to which the Blue Cod belongs. The Blue Cod, also known as the Boston Blue Cod or New Zealand Cod, is a valuable food source and a popular target for fisheries in the Southern Ocean. However, this painting predates commercial fishing and was created purely for scientific documentation and exploration purposes. Johann Georg Adam Forster, the artist's father, accompanied Cook on his first voyage between 1772 and 1775 and served as Cook's secretary and naturalist. Forster's extensive illustrations and writings about the natural history of the Pacific Islands and the Southern Ocean were groundbreaking in their time and remain an important record of the natural world during the Age of Discovery. This beautiful watercolor painting is a testament to the spirit of adventure and scientific curiosity that drove Cook and his crew on their epic journey to explore the unknown, and to the enduring value of natural history illustrations in documenting and preserving the natural world.
