This 19th-century colored engraving showcases Otto I, the King of Bavaria from 1886 to 1913. Born on March 15, 1848, Otto was the eldest son of Maximilian II, Duke in Bavaria, and Princess Ludovica of Austria. He became the successor of his eccentric and financially troubled uncle, King Louis II, in 1886. Otto I is depicted here in his regal attire, wearing the uniform of the Bavarian Army. His stern yet determined expression and the well-groomed moustache add to his imposing presence. The Wittelsbach dynasty, to which Otto belonged, had ruled Bavaria since 1180, making him the 14th ruler of this lineage.
