Bavaria Moustache Otto Wittelsbach

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century colored engraving showcases Otto I, the King of Bavaria from 1886 to 1913. Born on March 15, 1848, Otto was the eldest son of Maximilian II, Duke in Bavaria, and Princess Ludovica of Austria. He became the successor of his eccentric and financially troubled uncle, King Louis II, in 1886. Otto I is depicted here in his regal attire, wearing the uniform of the Bavarian Army. His stern yet determined expression and the well-groomed moustache add to his imposing presence. The Wittelsbach dynasty, to which Otto belonged, had ruled Bavaria since 1180, making him the 14th ruler of this lineage. During his reign, Otto I focused on modernizing the Bavarian military, improving the economy, and strengthening diplomatic relations with other European powers. He also played a significant role in the Dreyfus Affair, a high-profile antisemitic scandal in France, by advocating for the innocence of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain falsely accused of treason. This evocative portrait of Otto I, with its rich colors and intricate details, offers a glimpse into the history of Bavaria during the late 19th century. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the leadership of a monarch who left an indelible mark on his kingdom.
