Born in Berlin on July 13, 1883, Rausch began his swimming career at an early age and quickly rose to prominence. In St. Louis, he dominated the pool, winning the mile race in a time of 20 minutes and 41.8 seconds and the half-mile race in 6 minutes and 15.4 seconds. These victories marked the pinnacle of Rausch's competitive swimming career, and he retired from competition shortly thereafter.
