EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures an important legal document known as the "Official wording, Apprenticeship Indenture. " The indenture is a binding agreement between John Henry Watson, a young man of 17 years old residing at 3 Newland Street in Derby, and Messrs John Davis & Son (Derby) Limited. Dated on June 25th, 1901, this apprenticeship spans over five years and focuses on the skill of instrument making. The photograph showcases the signatures of three key individuals involved in this agreement. Firstly, we have John Henry Watson himself signing his commitment to this apprenticeship. Secondly, his father Walter Watson also signs as a witness to ensure his son's dedication to learning this trade. Lastly, Henry Davis - the Governing Director of Messrs John Davis & Son (Derby) Limited - adds his signature to solidify their role in providing training and employment opportunities. Notably mentioned are the terms regarding payment for young Mr. Watson's services throughout these five years. Starting at a modest wage of four shillings and sixpence per week during the first year, it gradually increases every subsequent year until reaching twelve shillings and sixpence by the fifth year. Furthermore, certain behavioral expectations are outlined within this document; including obedience towards superiors, refraining from damaging company property or engaging in unlawful activities such as gambling or visiting taverns/playhouses without consent. Overall, this print offers us a glimpse into Edwardian-era industry and highlights the importance placed upon skills training through formal apprenticeships like these.
