EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 85 from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain, Volume 5 (1873): A Stunning Hand-Colored Lithograph of Leach's Storm Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts a pair of Leach's Storm Petrels (Oceanodroma leucorhoa), a small seabird belonging to the family Hydrobatidae and the order Procellariiformes, in their natural habitat. The Sauropsida, a group of reptile-like animals that includes birds, is represented here by these graceful avians. John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain was a comprehensive work on the birds of Britain and its colonies, published between 1832 and 1837. The series consisted of 3 volumes and 111 plates, each meticulously produced using the lithographic technique. This plate, from the fifth volume, was published in 1873 and showcases the Leach's Storm Petrel in remarkable detail. The Leach's Storm Petrel is a small, dark-colored bird with white underparts and a distinctive white rump. It is named after the English naturalist John Leach, who first described the species in 1819. These birds are known for their ability to fly at high speeds over the ocean, often in stormy weather, making them excellent navigators and survivors. The lithograph captures the pair of birds perched on rocks outside, with their wings slightly spread, revealing the intricate patterns on their wings. The hand-coloring adds a vibrant touch to the image, making the details of the feathers and the texture of the birds' bodies stand out. The daytime setting and the serene expression on the birds' faces convey a sense of tranquility and harmony with nature. This beautiful hand-colored lithograph is a testament to the skill and artistry of the naturalists and artists of the nineteenth century, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world in such intricate and detailed ways. It is a must-have for any avian enthusiast or collector of historical natural history prints.
