EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning altarpiece, created by the 14th century Master of Obispo Galiana, showcases a captivating scene from the life of Saint Nicholas. The international Gothic masterpiece, tempera on wood, is a testament to the artistic prowess of the artist during the 14th century. The altarpiece, which originally proceeded from the Church of Sant Nicolauet Vell in Porto Pi, Mallorca, Spain, depicts three saints: Saint Nicholas, Saint Clare, and Saint Anthony. Saint Nicholas, the central figure, is shown in his bishop's robes, holding the model of a ship, a symbol of his famous act of charity. The saint is known for his generosity, as the legend goes, he saved three children from being sold into slavery by throwing gold coins into their father's stocking, which was hung by the chimney to dry. To the right of Saint Nicholas, we find Saint Clare, the founder of the Order of Poor Clares, holding a monstrance and a crucifix. She is shown in her traditional habit, with her hair uncovered, symbolizing her dedication to poverty and her commitment to the Lord. On the left side of the altarpiece, we find Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals and the poor, holding a book and a pig. The pig represents the miracle of the swine herd, where Saint Anthony drove the demons that possessed the herd into a pig, curing the possessed man. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this altarpiece reflect the artistic style of the International Gothic period, making it a valuable addition to the Mallorca Museum's collection.
