Nurses, Yarrow Military Hospitsal

Group of fifteen female nursing staff, taken at the Yarrow Military Hospital, Broadstairs in December 1914. The women are, with one possible exception, the one standing 4th left, civilian nurses who were members of the staff of the Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children. Sir Alfred Yarrow (1842-1932), shipbuilder and philanthropist, opened the home in c. 1895. In late 1914 the Committee of Management offered the Home to the military authorities as a military hospital, entirely staffed and paid for. This arrangement continued until c. August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. The building is now part of East Kent College, Broadstairs, Kent UK. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
15 Women Nurses of Yarrow Military Hospital, Broadstairs (December 1914) This evocative photograph captures a group of fifteen dedicated female nursing staff at the Yarrow Military Hospital in Broadstairs, Kent, during the winter of 1914. With the exception of the nurse standing fourth from the left, these women were civilian nurses who had been part of the staff at Sir Alfred Yarrow's Home for Convalescent Children prior to its transformation into a military hospital. Sir Alfred Yarrow (1842-1932), a renowned shipbuilder and philanthropist, had established the home around 1895 to provide care for sick and injured children. In late 1914, with the outbreak of World War I, the Committee of Management of the Yarrow Home offered the facility to the military authorities, who gratefully accepted. The hospital was entirely staffed and paid for by the committee, with the nurses continuing to serve until around August 1916 when it was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. The building that once housed the Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children is now part of East Kent College in Broadstairs. This poignant image serves as a testament to the selfless dedication of these women, who put their nursing skills at the service of their country during a time of great need. Their faces reveal a mix of determination, compassion, and resilience, reflecting the extraordinary circumstances under which they cared for the wounded soldiers. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role that civilian nursing staff played during the war effort.
