Turner depicts a pivotal moment during the early hours of June 6, 1944, as British forces initiated their amphibious landing on one of the Normandy beaches during the D-Day invasion. The scene is a chaotic tableau of men, landing craft, ships, and an array of tanks and other vehicles being offloaded onto the sandy shore. To the lower left, a crucial figure stands out: the Beach Master, with his arm raised, issuing orders. His communication is sometimes conveyed through Morse code, the light for which is powered by a pedalled dynamo. Though Turner was not present at the historic event, his work was informed by the firsthand account of Commander Antony Kimmins of the Royal Navy.
