EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Jussieu's "Dictionnaire de Naturalisation," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases three fascinating species of Old World deer: the Nilgai, Boselaphus tragocamelus, the greater Siberian musk deer, Moschus moschiferus, and the Chinese forest musk deer, Moschus berezovskii. The central figure of the composition is the majestic Nilgai, the largest Asian antelope, native to the Indian subcontinent. With its distinctive hump on its back, large ears, and elongated neck, the Nilgai stands proudly, gazing directly at the viewer. Its coat, depicted in rich browns and oranges, is adorned with white spots and stripes, providing excellent camouflage in its grassland habitat. To the left of the Nilgai, the greater Siberian musk deer, or Moschus moschiferus, is shown in a more cautious stance, its alert ears and twitching nose betraying its wariness. This species, native to the forests of eastern Asia, is renowned for the musk glands found on its abdomen, which produce a valuable and highly sought-after musk used in perfumes and traditional medicine. On the right side of the composition, the Chinese forest musk deer, or Moschus berezovskii, is depicted in a more playful pose, with its head tilted and its tongue extended in what appears to be a lick of delight. This smaller musk deer species, native to the forests of China, is also known for its musk glands, which produce a less potent but still valuable musk. The intricately detailed illustration, created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, is further enhanced by the meticulous engraving of Cignozzi, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by Batelli e Figli. The result is a stunning visual representation of these magnificent creatures, capturing their beauty and essence for generations to appreciate.
