Title: "Nicolaus Forgatsch: A 17th Century German Military General in Ober-Ungarn" Nicolaus Forgatsch (1587-1634) was a prominent German military figure during the 17th century, serving in various capacities in the military of the Habsburg Monarchy, with a significant portion of his career spent in the region of Ober-Ungarn, present-day Slovakia and western Ukraine. Born in the Austrian town of Graz, Forgatsch began his military career in the service of the Habsburg Monarchy under the command of Archduke Matthias. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic skills. In 1616, he was appointed as the Governor of Pressburg (Bratislava) and Commander of the Military Frontier in Upper Hungary. During his tenure in Ober-Ungarn, Forgatsch faced numerous challenges, including defending the region against Ottoman invasions and managing the complex political landscape of the area. He was known for his successful military campaigns against the Ottomans, particularly his victory at the Battle of Neuhäusel in 1621, which secured the region's borders for several years. Forgatsch's military prowess and administrative abilities earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors. He was knighted in 1622 and appointed as a General in the Habsburg Army. Despite his successes, Forgatsch faced criticism from some quarters for his harsh treatment of the local population, particularly the Hungarian nobility.
