This powerful photograph captures the moment New Zealand soldiers crest the edge of a hill following an artillery barrage during an attack on Cassino in Italy, 1944. Part of the larger campaign in the Italian Peninsula during World War Two, this image is a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of the Allied forces in the face of intense enemy fire. The soldiers, their faces set with focus and resolve, advance over the top of the hill as their comrades provide covering fire from below. The barrage of artillery shells that preceded their attack can be seen exploding in the distance, sending plumes of smoke and debris into the air. The New Zealanders, part of the 2nd New Zealand Division, fought valiantly in the Battle of Cassino, which lasted from January to May 1944. This photograph, one of 650 in the Commando Association's collection, offers a glimpse into the raw emotion and intensity of the battlefield, and serves as a testament to the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served during this pivotal time in history.
