In this striking photograph taken on July 26, 1905, Japanese Duke Yamagata Aritomo, a prominent figure in Meiji Japan as a field marshal, twice-elected Prime Minister, and one of the leaders of the Meiji oligarchy, is seen surrounded by six high-ranking military officials during his inspection tour to Mukden, Manchuria. The assemblage includes Admiral Kuroki Tamemoto, Commander of the 1st Army; Admiral Nozu Michitsura, Commander of the 4th Army; General Chief of Staff Yamagata Aritomo himself; General Oyama Iwao, Commander of the 2nd Army; General Oku Yasukata, Commander of the 3rd Army; General Kodama Gentaro, Manchurian Army General Chief of Staff; and General Kawamura Kageaki, Yalu River Army Commander. The Japanese economic presence and political interest in Manchuria had been growing steadily since the end of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Following the Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the war, Japan was granted the lease of the South Manchuria Railway branch (from Changchun to Lushun) of the China Far East Railway. This significant territorial expansion marked the beginning of Japan's involvement in Manchuria, which would eventually lead to the establishment of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo in 1932. Despite the absence of any commercial references in the photograph, the military officials' presence in Manchuria underscores the strategic importance of the region to Japan's expanding influence in East Asia.
