EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of joy and respite at John A. Grooms Crippleage and Orphanage in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, circa 1908. The image shows a group of women, some with crutches and others riding tricycles, gathered around the Crippleage Wheelers, a transport service established to provide mobility and independence for disabled flower-sellers. John A. Grooms, a London engraver and evangelical preacher, founded the Watercress and Flower Girls' Christian Mission in 1866, with the aim of providing care and support for poor and often disabled women who sold flowers on the streets. By the late 19th century, the mission had grown to include the Crippleage and Orphanage in Clacton-on-Sea, which offered a sanctuary for those in need of medical care and a holiday home by the sea. The women in this photograph appear to be enjoying a sunny day out, their faces filled with happiness and contentment. The tricycles, which were specially designed to accommodate those with mobility issues, allow them to move around with greater ease and independence. The use of crutches is also evident, highlighting the medical care and support provided by the Crippleage and Orphanage. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the important work carried out by John A. Grooms and his mission, which provided vital care and welfare for some of the most vulnerable members of society during the early 1900s. The image captures a sense of community and camaraderie, as well as the transformative power of charitable organizations in improving the lives of those in need.
