EDITORS COMMENTS
The General Election: Free Fooders - A Comic Postcard Series from the Early 1900s Step back in time to the bustling era of British politics in 1908, as we present this humorous postcard from the Mary Evans / Grenville Collins Postcard Collection. This delightful comic postcard captures the excitement and tension of a general election, with a playful twist on the name of the Unionist Free Food League. In this lively scene, candidates from various political parties face the electorate with grim determination, as they are pelted with a barrage of eggs and vegetables! A clever nod to the Unionist Free Food League, a pressure group formed in 1903 by Conservative and Liberal Unionist politicians advocating for free trade and opposing Joseph Chamberlain's Tariff Reform proposals. The hustings are in full swing, with candidates giving passionate speeches, trying to win over the crowd. But their words are often interrupted by the unexpected flying projectiles, which leave them shocked, alarmed, and even a little disgusted! Among the chaos, we see a vicar in the crowd, looking on in shock as an egg lands near him. The candidates' faces are priceless as they dodge the flying vegetables, with one candidate even dropping his notes in surprise. The speaker at the podium looks equally alarmed, trying to maintain order amidst the vegetable war. This fun and funny postcard series offers a lighthearted glimpse into the political process of the early 1900s, with a touch of satire and humor. Whether you're a history buff, a politics enthusiast, or just looking for a laugh, this postcard is sure to bring a smile to your face!
