EDITORS COMMENTS
A haunting image of war and conquest: The Siege of Barcelona in 801, as depicted on this vintage print shows Frankish soldiers protected behind a mantlet, while the inhabitants themselves opened the gates to their army led by William of Gellone, Duke of Toulouse. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Louis the Pious' campaign to reclaim Muslim-held city from Carolingian Empire's 9th century expansion in Europe during medieval times.
