The Field Lane Ragged School was established in 1844 to provide education for the poorest children in London. These children, often orphaned or abandoned, were unable to attend traditional schools due to their poverty. The ragged schools offered a refuge for these children, providing them with basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as instruction in morals and values. Despite the best efforts of the teachers and volunteers, discipline was a constant challenge in the ragged schools. The children, many of whom had never experienced consistent care or structure, often struggled to adhere to the rules.
