EDITORS COMMENTS
Three Swimming Champions of the 1920s: Helen Meany (later Gravis), Sybil Bauer, and Doris O'Mara, in an Elegant Group Photograph from a Swimming Event in St. Augustine, Florida, 1925. This photograph captures the essence of the Roaring Twenties, as three of America's most accomplished swimming champions, Helen Meany (later Gravis), Sybil Bauer, and Doris O'Mara, pose gracefully in their stylish bathing suits at a swimming event in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1925. Helen Meany, later known as Helen Gravis, was a formidable figure in the world of competitive swimming. Born in 1904, she set her first national record in the 100-yard freestyle at the age of 16. Her impressive career included numerous national titles and a silver medal in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Sybil Bauer, born in 1903, was another swimming sensation of the era. She broke multiple records in the 100-yard freestyle and backstroke, and was a three-time AAU national champion. Tragically, she passed away in 1927 at the young age of 24. Doris O'Mara, born in 1908, was also a talented swimmer, setting national records in the 100-yard freestyle and backstroke. She went on to compete in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, finishing fifth in the 100-meter freestyle. The trio's elegant bathing suits, with their high waistlines, long sleeves, and intricate patterns, reflect the fashion trends of the time. The image exudes a sense of sophistication and glamour, transporting us back to a bygone era of American athleticism and style.
