EDITORS COMMENTS
Summoning Reserves: The Call to Arms in a Bulgarian Town during the Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885) This evocative image captures the moment of mobilization in a small Bulgarian town during the brief but pivotal Serbo-Bulgarian War. The scene portrays an officer in military uniform, blowing a horn to rally the townspeople, as soldiers respond to the call to defend Sofia against invading Serbian forces. The Serbo-Bulgarian War, which lasted from November 14th to 28th, 1885, was initiated by Serbia in protest of Bulgaria's unification with Eastern Rumelia. The soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, march away from their rural homes, leaving behind their families and daily lives, to answer their country's call to arms. The image underscores the sense of urgency and determination that characterized this conflict, which ultimately ended in a decisive Bulgarian victory. The Serbo-Bulgarian War marked a significant turning point in the history of the Balkans, and this powerful photograph offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people during times of war. The image is a testament to the courage and resilience of the Bulgarian people, who, despite the challenges they faced, were able to defend their newly unified nation.
