RMS Carpathia, salvaged red octagonal floor tile

RMS Carpathia, salvaged red patterned earthenware octagonal floor tile from an unknown location on the ship, approx. 0.875 (d) x 5.875 (w) x 6 inches (diameter). Given its sturdy structure, its depth and its weight, it would appear to be from a high traffic area on board. While a kitchen area would seem possible, its pattern more likely suggests that it came from a well frequented passenger area. The Carpathia was torpedoed during WW1. The tile was recovered on 1 September 2007 by the Achilles Rover using an ROV basket. There is a remnant of a marine encrustation and some losses to the edges. Date: early 20th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a salvaged red octagonal floor tile from the RMS Carpathia, an iconic ocean liner that met its unfortunate end during World War I. Measuring approximately 0.875 inches in diameter and boasting a sturdy structure with a depth and weight suggesting high traffic areas on board, this earthenware tile's vibrant pattern points towards a well-frequented passenger area rather than a kitchen. The tile, which dates back to the early 20th century, was discovered on September 1, 2007, by the Achilles Rover using an ROV basket. A remnant of marine encrustation and some losses to the edges add to its intriguing history. The RMS Carpathia, known for its role in maritime transportation and travel, was torpedoed during World War I. This tile, a testament to the ship's past, offers a glimpse into its opulent passenger spaces and the daily life aboard this magnificent vessel.
