EDITORS COMMENTS
Rafael del Riego (1784-1823) was a Spanish military officer and politician who played a pivotal role in the Liberal Revolution of 1820 in Spain. In this striking portrait, painted by the renowned Spanish artist J. Cebrian, Riego is depicted in his military uniform, reflecting his background as a soldier. The portrait was published as a lithograph in the "Cronica General de Espana," a historical and descriptive chronicle of Spain and its provinces, published in Asturias and Leon in 1867. Riego is best known for his role in the proclamation of the Liberal Constitution of Cadiz on March 12, 1820, in the town of Cabezas de San Juan, in the province of Sevilla, Andalusia. This event marked the beginning of the Liberal Triennium, a period of political reform and liberalization in Spain that lasted until 1823. During this time, Spain experienced significant political and social changes, including the abolition of the Inquisition, the establishment of freedom of the press, and the recognition of individual rights and freedoms. However, these reforms were met with resistance from conservative forces, leading to the end of the Triennium and the restoration of the absolute monarchy under King Ferdinand VII. Riego, a strong advocate for liberalism and the constitution, was arrested and sentenced to death in 1823 for his role in the Triennium. He was later pardoned and exiled to France, where he died in 1823. This portrait serves as a powerful reminder of Riego's significant contribution to Spanish history and the liberal movement in Europe during the early 19th century.
