EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful illustration by Chris G. Temple depicts the iconic Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" taking a break from her royal duties to indulge in a charming pastime: baking tarts in her quintessential 1920s kitchen. The Queen, dressed in her regal attire complete with a towering crown and heart-adorned scepter, rolls out pastry at a sunlit table. A window behind her opens to reveal a lush garden, while nearby, a pinafore-clad mother goose looks on approvingly. The Queen's mischievous subjects, the Knave of Hearts and the Jack of Hearts, are nowhere to be seen, but the presence of a stolen tart on the table suggests their involvement in the baking process. The Queen's stern expression and the Knave's infamous "Off with their heads!" catchphrase are absent, replaced by the joyful atmosphere of a mother sharing a culinary experience with her children. The tarts, filled with plum or jam, are cooling on the windowsill, their golden crusts glistening under the soft light. The Queen's apron, adorned with hearts and diamonds, adds a playful touch to the scene. This charming illustration captures the whimsy and nostalgia of the 1920s and invites us to imagine a moment of warmth and togetherness in Wonderland.
