EDITORS COMMENTS
In this chromolithography print, we find the future King Alfonso XII of Spain, also known as the Prince of Asturias, proudly wearing the Cross of Maria Isabel Luisa. This photograph, taken during his childhood in the mid-19th century, showcases the young prince's regal bearing and the rich history of the Spanish monarchy. The Prince of Asturias, born in 1857, was the eldest son of Queen Isabella II and her consort, Francisco de Asis de Borbón. The Cross of Maria Isabel Luisa, named after his mother, was a distinguished Spanish decoration established in 1831, and it was awarded to the heir apparent as a symbol of their loyalty and commitment to the Spanish crown. The chromolithography, produced by the contemporary Spanish artist Julio Donon in 1865, captures the young prince wearing the red and blue sash of the Order of Maria Isabel Luisa, adorned with the golden cross and the distinctive white badge. The prince is depicted wearing a military uniform, complete with a cap and a hat, reflecting his role as the future monarch and the military leader of the Spanish forces. This historical image offers a glimpse into the rich traditions and customs of the Spanish monarchy during the 19th century, a time of political instability and change in Europe. The Prince of Asturias would eventually ascend to the throne in 1874, at the age of 17, following the abdication of his mother, Queen Isabella II. His reign, which lasted until his untimely death in 1885, marked a period of relative stability and modernization in Spanish history. This print, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Spanish monarchy and the rich history of its orders of chivalry and decorations.
