The Old Mint - Bennet's Hall, Pride Hill, Shrewsbury

Doorway to the principal floor of Bennet's Hall, which dates back to the mid 13th century and is sometimes known as The Old Mint, since it is believed to have been the site of Charles I's Shrewsbury Mint, during the Civil War. It has more recently been established that this was the town house of the Ludlow family, probably built by Nicholas, father of the builder of Stokesay Castle. The archway beside the steps led to Leopard Shut, later known as Purslow's Passage, after a tailor at No 3 Pride Hill. Once one of the most-photographed scenes in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. These remains have miraculously survived and are incorporated into a modern coffee shop interior!! Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this stunning print of The Old Mint - Bennet's Hall in Shrewsbury. Dating back to the mid 13th century, this historic building is steeped in tales of Charles I's Shrewsbury Mint during the Civil War. However, recent research has revealed that it was actually the town house of the Ludlow family, possibly built by Nicholas Ludlow himself. The archway beside the steps leads to Leopard Shut, later known as Purslow's Passage after a tailor who once resided there. This scene was once one of the most photographed in Shrewsbury, capturing the essence of its rich history and architectural beauty. Despite its age, these remains have miraculously survived and are now incorporated into a modern coffee shop interior. It is truly remarkable how this piece of history has been preserved through the years, allowing visitors to step into a bygone era while enjoying their favorite cup of coffee. This print from 1904 captures not just a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of Shropshire's rich heritage and cultural significance. The intricate details of Bennet's Hall doorway and principal floor are beautifully captured by Grenville Collins, showcasing his talent for bringing historical landmarks to life through photography.
