EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming series of six illustrations, titled "The Mole" and dating back to circa 1901, tells a delightful and playful story of a sneaky mole and two dogs. In the first image, the mole is shown crouching next to a bowl of food, its beady eyes fixed on the unsuspecting Dog No. 1, who is peacefully lying nearby. In the second illustration, the mole makes its move, stealthily dragging the bowl towards Dog No. 1, who remains oblivious. In the third image, Dog No. 1 wakes up, startled, as the bowl is pulled away from under his nose. His expression is one of surprise and confusion. In the fourth illustration, the mole quickly moves the bowl to the other dog, Dog No. 2, who is shown eagerly wagging his tail and looking up in anticipation. The fifth illustration shows Dog No. 1, now feeling left out and slightly miffed, while Dog No. 2 enjoys the food. In the final image, Dog No. 1 looks on enviously as Dog No. 2 finishes the last morsels, his expression a mixture of disappointment and frustration. These illustrations, from the "March of the Women" Collection by Les Maitres de la Caricature, are a testament to the power of a simple story told through art. The use of humor and emotion in these images makes for a delightful sequence that continues to captivate viewers over a century after they were first created. The illustrations are believed to have been created by Benjamin Rabier, a renowned French caricaturist of the time, and are a wonderful addition to any album or collection of classic illustrations.
