EDITORS COMMENTS
Map showing the Erosion of the Suffolk Coastline (circa 1912) This antique map, dated circa 1912, provides a poignant snapshot of the Suffolk coastline as it appeared over a century ago. The map, produced by the Illustrated London News (ILN) - Consolidated Archive Holdings Ltd, highlights the areas that had been lost to the relentless advance of the North Sea. The once unbroken line of the coast has been replaced by a jagged, uneven edge, with large expanses of land now submerged beneath the waves. The primary cause of this erosion was the chalk cliffs that make up much of the Suffolk coast. The porous chalk, composed of calcium carbonate, is easily eroded by the action of the sea. Over time, the relentless battering of the waves against the cliffs has caused them to crumble and fall into the sea, taking with them vast swathes of land. The map shows the extent of the erosion in areas such as Dover, where the cliffs have retreated significantly, leaving only a narrow strip of land between the sea and the village. The power of the sea is evident in the map's depiction of the crescent-shaped bays and inlets that have been carved out of the coastline. Despite the advance of the sea, the Suffolk coastline remains a popular destination for visitors, who come to marvel at the natural beauty of the cliffs and the ever-changing shape of the shoreline. However, the threat of further erosion remains a constant concern, with many communities along the coast working to protect their homes and infrastructure from the encroaching sea.
