Letter written by Ida Stanton on board RMS Carpathia

Handwritten letter written on board RMS Carpathia dated 15 August 1912 with original Cunard envelope. Dear Papa and boys... we were delayed by boarding a large cargoe (sic) of spaghetti... This is rather a poor ship. No distinguished people aboard and seemingly no interesting ones. It is a sight to see the emigrants the men without families at one end, 7 they are as thick as the fingers on ones hand - mostly Greeks - they are good natured and sing and play games; some of the people in the rooms below, slept in the parlor (sic) numerous for comfort, and their rooms fearfully hot, but we have a lovely room. Plenty fresh air and no rugs... last night a lady from Kansas and I had a long talk with the Captain. This is his first run since the rescue of the Titanic. He is very simple and modest, and said he found in the dictionary the meaning of Titanic was a race of men vainly trying to overcome nature... tell the boys no pretty girls on and a very dull company. Ida D. Stanton'. Date: 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handwritten letter, penned by Ida Stanton aboard the RMS Carpathia on August 15, 1912, offers a unique glimpse into the experiences of a passenger during one of the most historic maritime events of the 20th century. The letter, accompanied by the original Cunard envelope, was written just days after the Carpathia had rescued survivors from the sinking RMS Titanic. Ida's words paint a vivid picture of life aboard the Carpathia, with its cargo of spaghetti causing a delay in their departure. She describes the ship as "rather a poor one," with no distinguished or interesting passengers aboard, save for the emigrants, who she finds to be good-natured and entertaining. The men without families, mostly Greeks, are a sight to behold, she writes, as they sing and play games. Ida also notes that some passengers are crowded together in the rooms below, enduring sweltering heat, while she and her companions enjoy a lovely, cool room with plenty of fresh air and no rugs. In an intriguing turn of events, Ida and a lady from Kansas had a lengthy conversation with the Captain, who was on his first run since the Titanic rescue. He is described as simple and modest, and shares his thoughts on the meaning of the word "Titanic," which he interprets as a race of men vainly trying to overcome nature. Ida concludes her letter by assuring her family that there are no pretty girls on board and that the company is very dull. This fascinating letter, preserved by Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd. and available through Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a rare and personal perspective on the aftermath of the Titanic disaster and life aboard a rescue ship in the early 20th century.
