EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithography print showcases a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic. The Order, officially named the Royal and American Order of Isabella the Catholic, was established on 14 March 1815 by King Ferdinand VII of Spain in honor of his mother, Queen Isabella I. The Order's creation marked the beginning of the 19th century and the reign of Ferdinand VII. The Knight Commander is depicted wearing the full regalia of his rank. He dons a white shirt with a ruff collar, a red sash, and a cloak adorned with the Order's insignia. The knight's most prominent accessory is the collar of the Order, which features the image of Queen Isabella I surrounded by the Spanish coat of arms, the American eagle, and the motto "Fidelidad, Lealtad y Merito" (Fidelity, Loyalty, and Merit). The knight also wears a large orange-colored badge on his chest, representing the Order's distinctive color. The Knight Commander's cape is draped over his left shoulder, while his sword and sash are slung over his right. The intricate design of his coat, with its gold buttons and intricate patterns, adds to the grandeur of the image. The knight's head is adorned with a millstone-shaped cap, which is a common feature of Spanish orders of chivalry. The Historia de las Ordenes de Caballeria y de las Condecoraciones Espanolas (History of the Orders of Chivalry and the Spanish Decorations) publication in Madrid, 1865, captures this historical moment in Spanish history, providing a glimpse into the rich traditions and customs of the time.
