EDITORS COMMENTS
King Alfonso XII of Spain (1857-1885), also known as El Pacificador or 'The Peacemaker,' is depicted in this striking portrait taken in the year of his untimely death. Born on November 28, 1857, Alfonso was the eldest son of Queen Isabella II and her third husband, Alfonso, Duke of Madera. He ascended to the throne at the age of 22 following the Glorious Revolution of 1868, which overthrew his mother's rule. During his reign, Alfonso worked to restore the monarchy's legitimacy and stability, making peace with the Carlist pretenders and implementing political and social reforms. He also sought to modernize the Spanish military and strengthen its position in the face of external threats. Tragically, Alfonso's life was cut short when he succumbed to dysentery on November 25, 1885, at the young age of 27. He was the last Spanish monarch to die on the throne. His death came just a few months before the birth of his son, Alfonso XIII, who would succeed him the following year. In this portrait, Alfonso is shown wearing the uniform of the Spanish Navy, reflecting his role as Admiral of the Spanish Fleet. The profile view offers a close-up look at his distinguished features, including his bushy mustache and piercing gaze. The image captures the essence of a determined and resolute leader, whose legacy as El Pacificador continues to be celebrated in Spanish history.
