HMS Courageous 50
Royal Navy - HMS Courageous 50, an aircraft carrier, seen in July 1936, (formerly a battle-cruiser). HMS Courageous was the lead ship of her class of three battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during the First World War. Courageous was completed in late 1916 and spent the war patrolling the North Sea and participated in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917. Courageous was rebuilt as an aircraft carrier during the mid-1920s. She spent most of her career operating off Great Britain and Ireland. She briefly became a training ship, but reverted to her normal role a few months before the start of the Second World War in September 1939. Courageous was torpedoed and sunk in the opening weeks of the war, going down with more than 500 of her crew. Date: 1936. HMS Courageous 50: A Naval Veteran's Transformation from Battlecruiser to Aircraft Carrier This evocative photograph captures the HMS Courageous 50 in July 1936, a testament to the rich history of this Royal Navy vessel. Originally commissioned as the lead ship of the Courageous-class battlecruisers in 1916, HMS Courageous spent her early years patrolling the North Sea and participating in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917. However, her story does not end there. In the mid-1920s, HMS Courageous underwent a significant transformation. She was rebuilt as an aircraft carrier, adapting to the evolving nature of naval warfare. For the remainder of her career, she operated primarily off the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. Although she briefly served as a training ship, she reverted to her normal role just a few months before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. Tragically, HMS Courageous's tenure in the Royal Navy came to an end in the opening weeks of the war. In September 1939, she was torpedoed and sunk, taking more than 500 of her crew with her. This poignant image, from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a poignant reminder of the HMS Courageous 50's storied past, her transformation from battlecruiser to aircraft carrier, and the sacrifices made by her crew during the tumultuous times of the early 20th century.
