EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, we see the Douglas XB-19 38-471, a military transport aircraft produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the United States Air Force during World War II. The XB-19 was designed as a heavy transport aircraft, capable of carrying large payloads over long distances. With a wingspan of over 100 feet and a length of nearly 75 feet, this impressive machine dwarfs the figures of the ground crew members who are seen working around it. The XB-19 made its first flight on October 26, 1942, and was the largest aircraft in the US military inventory at the time. It was originally intended for use as a bomber, but its size and payload capacity made it a better fit for transport duties. The aircraft featured in this photograph, 38-471, was the third XB-19 built, and was assigned the manufacturing serial number MSN 2001. The Douglas XB-19 was an important development in military aviation technology, and its design influenced the development of later transport aircraft such as the C-5 Galaxy. This photograph captures a moment in history when the United States Air Force was pushing the boundaries of what was possible in aviation transportation, and the Douglas XB-19 was at the forefront of that effort. Despite its impressive size and capabilities, the XB-19 was only produced in small numbers due to the end of the war and the availability of surplus cargo aircraft. This photograph serves as a reminder of the innovation and determination of the engineers, pilots, and ground crews who worked to keep the US military flying during World War II.
