EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from The Tony Lovelock Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, we find the Royal Jordanian Air Force's CASA C-101CC Aviojet 1155 (msn CC04-18-116) taking center stage at the Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary Air Show held at Boscombe Down on the 9th of June 1990. The C-101CC Aviojet, a versatile and advanced military trainer and light attack aircraft, proudly displays the royal emblem of Jordan on its fuselage as it prepares for an aerial display, paying tribute to the historic Battle of Britain that took place half a century prior. The Battle of Britain, a pivotal moment in World War II, saw the Royal Air Force (RAF) successfully defend the United Kingdom against large-scale attacks by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) in the summer and autumn of 1940. This commemorative air show brought together various aircraft types, old and new, to celebrate the bravery and resilience of the RAF during this crucial period. The CASA C-101CC Aviojet, manufactured by Construcciones Aeronáuticas de Espana (CASA), was a popular choice for air forces around the world due to its impressive capabilities. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Viper Mk. 611 engine, this agile and nimble aircraft could reach speeds of over 500 miles per hour and boasted a maximum range of approximately 1,000 miles. The Aviojet served various roles, including training, reconnaissance, and light attack missions, making it a valuable asset to the Royal Jordanian Air Force. As the C-101CC Aviojet 1155 taxis along the runway at Boscombe Down, the crowd eagerly anticipates the thrilling display of power and precision that awaits them. This photograph not only captures the essence of the Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary Air Show but also highlights the rich history and significance of military aviation.
