EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the British and Norwegian bases at the South Pole are depicted, with the routes taken by two pioneering explorers, Roald Amundsen of Norway and Robert Falcon Scott of Britain, clearly visible. The Norwegian base is situated on the Bay of Whales, while the British Base is at Robertson Bay. The year is 1911, and this image captures the spirit of competition and discovery that drove these intrepid explorers to new territories. Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian polar explorer, led the first successful expedition to the South Pole, reaching the pole on December 14, 1911, beating Scott's team by just over a month. Amundsen's team, which included Olaf Bjaalund, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, and Hans Wisting, traveled from the coast of the Ross Ice Shelf, following a proposed route that would take them across the Ross Ice Shelf, the Transantarctic Mountains, and the Ross Ice Plateau. Meanwhile, Scott and his team, which included Edgar Evans, Lawrence Oates, and Tom Crean, set out from the Ross Ice Shelf in November 1911, following a more direct route across the Beardmore Glacier and the polar plateau. Unfortunately, Scott and his team did not reach the pole, as they succumbed to extreme weather conditions and exhaustion. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the determination and bravery of these early polar explorers, who risked their lives to explore the unknown and expand human knowledge of the world. The routes they took, marked on the map, serve as a testament to their achievements and the spirit of exploration that continues to drive us forward.
