EDITORS COMMENTS
This pair of architectural drawings showcases the north and south elevations of a house designed by the renowned Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's collaborator and contemporary, M.H. Baillie Scott. Dated to the early 1900s, the design, aptly named "A House for an Art Lover," is an exquisite example of the Arts and Crafts movement. Baillie Scott's innovative approach to the style is evident in the intricate details and harmonious balance of form and function. The north elevation reveals a symmetrical facade, with a central gabled entrance flanked by tall, narrow windows. The use of stucco and timber cladding creates a textured and visually appealing exterior. The south elevation, on the other hand, displays a more asymmetrical design, with a series of interconnected gabled roofs and a large, bay window that extends from the ground floor to the second floor. The windows on this side are more irregularly placed, adding to the overall sense of dynamism and movement. Baillie Scott's design for "A House for an Art Lover" was initially conceived as a competition entry for a house to be built in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, for the International Exhibition of 1901. Although it did not win the competition, the design gained significant attention and eventually inspired the construction of a full-scale replica at the Glasgow's Rozelle Park in 1994. These drawings serve as a testament to Baillie Scott's exceptional talent and his commitment to creating beautiful, functional spaces that celebrate the arts and the natural world.
