EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a selection of artefacts unearthed during the 1925 excavation of Tel-El-Obeid, a small settlement mound located west of Ur in southern Iraq's Dhi Qar Governorate. Ur, mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the birthplace of the Israelite and Ismaelite patriarch Abraham, has long held historical significance. The artefacts displayed here include a mother-of-pearl porch pillar, intricately crafted pottery flowers, a clay urn, a carved ox, and a model of a thrown. These treasures offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Ur and the Chaldeans. The mother-of-pearl pillar, with its delicate and intricate design, would have once adorned a grand entranceway. The pottery flowers, meticulously crafted from clay, add a touch of beauty and elegance to any vessel. The clay urn, with its simple yet functional design, would have been used for various purposes in daily life. The carved ox, a common motif in ancient art, represents the strength and power of this important animal in ancient cultures. The model of a thrown, a replica of a weapon used in warfare, speaks to the militaristic nature of ancient societies. These artefacts are now on display at the British Museum, preserving the history and stories of Ur and its people for generations to come.
