EDITORS COMMENTS
The Archers of Burgundy, also known as the Blade Guard or Burgundy Guard Archers, were an elite armed unit established in Spain during the 15th century by King Philip I of Castile. Originally hailing from the Burgundy region of Europe, these archers were renowned for their exceptional marksmanship and bravery. In this engraving by Serra, a group of Archers of Burgundy are depicted, both on foot and on horseback. The archers on foot are shown wearing distinctive uniforms, consisting of a short tunic, hose, and a distinctive hat with a wide brim. They are armed with longbows and daggers, ready to defend the royal rooms. Meanwhile, the archers on horseback are shown wearing helmets and carrying bows and quivers. They represent the mobile component of the unit, ready to engage in battle outside the royal palace. The Archers of Burgundy were an essential part of the Habsburg monarchy's military forces during the reign of Philip I of Castile and played a crucial role in the wars of the Iberian Peninsula. This engraving, which dates back to 1883 and was later colorized, is now housed in the Museo Militar in Madrid. It offers a unique glimpse into the appearance and equipment of these elite archers, who were an essential part of European military history during the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.
