EDITORS COMMENTS
Antonio Valdes y Fernandez Bazan (1744-1816), a prominent Spanish military and marine figure of the 18th and early 19th centuries, is depicted in this striking lithograph illustration from the "Cronica General de Espana" published in Asturias and Leon in 1867. Valdes y Fernandez Bazan served under King Charles III of Spain, during a period of significant political and military change in Europe. He rose to prominence as a naval officer, and later became a minister and politician, holding various high-ranking positions in the Spanish government. In this portrait, Valdes y Fernandez Bazan is shown wearing the decorations and insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, one of the most prestigious orders in the Spanish monarchy. The Order's white insignia, featuring a golden fleece, is clearly visible on his chest. He is also depicted wearing a grand wig, a common fashion accessory of the time, and holding a Spanish flag. Valdes y Fernandez Bazan's military career began in the late 18th century, during a time when Spain was expanding its colonial empire and facing threats from European powers. He served in various naval battles and campaigns, earning numerous honors and accolades for his bravery and leadership. Later in life, Valdes y Fernandez Bazan turned to politics, becoming a key figure in the Spanish government during the reign of Charles III. He served as a minister and held various other important positions, playing a crucial role in shaping Spanish policy during a time of political and economic change. This lithograph, created by the Spanish artist Llanta, offers a glimpse into the life and career of a remarkable Spanish figure, whose military and political accomplishments left a lasting impact on Spanish history.
