EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the legendary encounter between King Shantanu of Hastinapur and the divine goddess Ganga in ancient India. According to Hindu mythology, King Shantanu was wandering along the banks of the River Ganges in deep contemplation when he encountered the goddess in her divine form. Moved by his piety and devotion, Ganga offered herself to be his queen, with the condition that he would never speak an angry word to her. King Shantanu, elated by this divine blessing, agreed to the condition and ruled over his kingdom with Ganga as his queen. However, as the years passed, King Shantanu's patience was tested when his son, Bhishma, disobeyed his orders and eloped with the princess Satyavati. Enraged by his son's disobedience, King Shantanu could not contain his anger and spoke an angry word to Ganga, breaking his sacred promise. Ganga, true to her word, left the kingdom in a huff, taking the River Ganges with her. The river flowed away from Hastinapur, leaving the kingdom without its life-giving waters. King Shantanu was filled with remorse and regret, realizing the gravity of his actions. He embarked on a penance to seek forgiveness from Ganga and bring the river back to his kingdom. This image captures the moment of their reunion, with Ganga forgiving King Shantanu and returning to the kingdom, symbolizing the power of repentance and forgiveness in Hindu mythology.
