Prince Albert onboard HMS Collingwood

Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), as a midshipman on HMS Collingwood, in the summer of 1914. Prince Albert was the only child of George V, other than Prince Edward, who was old enough for active service. Unlike his brother, he was not protected and in May 1916, as a sub-lieutenant on Collingwood, he took part in the Battle of Jutland. His spells at sea however, were constantly interrupted by stomach trouble and in 1917 he required an operation for a duodenal ulcer. In 1918 he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a young Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), during his time as a midshipman onboard HMS Collingwood in the summer of 1914. As the only son of King George V old enough for active service, Prince Albert was determined to contribute to the British war effort during the early stages of World War I. Unlike his brother, Prince Edward, who was also in the navy but protected from the frontlines, Prince Albert faced the risks of the sea. In May 1916, as a sub-lieutenant on Collingwood, he took part in the historic Battle of Jutland. However, his spells at sea were frequently disrupted by stomach trouble, and in 1917, he underwent an operation for a duodenal ulcer. In 1918, he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force, continuing his military service in a different capacity. In this image, the future monarch is seen gazing intently through a telescope on the deck of the 6th Battlecruiser Squadron's flagship. His uniform, adorned with the insignia of his rank, is crisp and neat, reflecting the discipline and order of the Royal Navy. The photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of a royal family member during wartime, showcasing their dedication and commitment to their country.
